What is whiplash injury?
Whiplash injury refers to the rapid back-and-forth motion of the neck—much like the cracking of a whip—typically caused by rear-end car collisions. In individuals with cervical spinal stenosis, this sudden movement can compress the spinal cord within an already narrowed canal. Even low-impact trauma can trigger symptoms such as limb weakness, numbness, gait disturbances, or new-onset myelopathy. While whiplash is often benign, pre-existing stenosis demands prompt MRI evaluation and, in some cases, surgical decompression to prevent lasting neurological damage.
