A microscopic lumbar discectomy is a surgical procedure performed to relieve sciatica pain caused by a slipped disc or disc prolapse. This procedure is recommended by Dr Ramachandran when the pain persists for more than 6 weeks and is not relieved by medical treatment, or in cases of weakness in the leg, foot drop, cauda equina syndrome, or a large disc pressing on the nerve root. The surgery, which is carried out under general or regional anesthesia, involves making a small incision of only an inch and removing the ligaments called ligamentum flavum to access the neural structures. Dr Ramachandran uses a microscope to carefully retract the nerves and remove the prolapsed disc without causing any damage. He also believes in early mobilization for a faster recovery and encourages patients to walk on the same day of surgery. Usually, patients are able to leave the hospital the next day and rehabilitation is initiated for post-operative care.

Dr Ramachandran’s expertise and careful approach make microscopic lumbar discectomy a highly effective and efficient treatment option for those suffering from sciatica pain due to a slipped disc.
