Spine & Spasticity

What is Spasticity and it’s effects on limbs?

Spasticity refers to an abnormal increase in muscle tone, particularly in anti-gravity muscles. Muscle tone is the natural state of partial contraction in resting muscles. In spasticity, the tone becomes excessively heightened, which often results from spinal cord involvement. This condition is characterized by symptoms like tightness, clumsiness, and weakness in the hands or legs. In severe cases, even a mild touch can trigger sudden jerky movements, akin to the unexpected motions of “emoji spring-loaded jump toys” .
