What is “shoulder presentation” in a disc prolapse?
In disc prolapse, the nerve root exits the dural sac much like an arm extending from the body. When the disc herniates, it often pushes out just to the side of where the nerve joins the dural sac—this is called a shoulder presentation.
Because the disc material presses on the side of the nerve at this junction, it causes pain. To reduce this pressure, the body naturally tilts away from the affected side, helping to relieve discomfort.
