Spine & fragility fracture

What is an Osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture?

An osteoporotic vertebral fracture is a type of spinal injury that occurs when weakened fragile bones, due to osteoporosis, break under normal stress or minor trauma like bending, coughing, or even sneezing. These fractures, also known as vertebral compression fractures or fragility fractures , are common in older adults, especially women over 50, and often happen in the mid or lower back. They can cause sudden back pain, reduced height, and a hunched posture. Since osteoporosis makes bones fragile, these fractures may be the first sign of the condition. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent further fractures and maintain mobility.
