What is a dumbbell tumor?

A dumbbell tumor is a non-cancerous growth that originates from the spinal nerve within the spinal canal and extends through the foramen (the openings in the spine). The tumor’s structure resembles a dumbbell, with a narrow part crossing the foramen and two larger masses on either side—one within the spinal canal and the other outside the spine. These tumors are typically benign and commonly identified as either neurofibromas or schwannomas.
