When should hot and cold compresses be used for back pain?
Hot compresses work by increasing blood flow to the application site, which helps relieve pain. On the other hand, cold compresses numb the area and constrict blood vessels. In cases of injuries where swelling can cause more damage initially, ice packs are preferred. For chronic backaches to reduce the stiffness and post-exercise recovery, where lactic acid needs to be flushed out, hot packs are better.
