What is the Ligamentum Flavum?
The ligamentum “Flavum” , aptly named for its Yellow color, is an elastic ligament that extends from one spinal lamina to another. It plays a crucial role in maintaining spinal posture and helps return the spine to its straight position after forward flexion. As we age, the ligament can hypertrophy, potentially leading to spinal canal stenosis. In some cases, it can become as hard as rock and is then referred to as an ossified yellow ligament (OYLL).
