Spine & DISH

What is DISH?

DISH, or Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis, is a condition where, instead of a decline in bone production with age, individuals develop new bone growth across the vertebrae, spanning the disc motion segments. This leads to stiffness and back pain. The condition is more commonly observed in men who are obese or diabetic. While the exact cause is unknown, it has been linked to potential genetic factors. In severe cases, excessive bone formation can cause spinal stenosis by narrowing the spinal canal, a condition referred to as OPLL—ossified posterior longitudinal ligament.
