What is Diplomyelia?

Diplomyelia is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the presence of double spinal cords within a single dural covering like a double bananas. This condition can either be asymptomatic or cause symptoms such as leg numbness, weakness, and urinary incontinence, often due to associated tethering. Diplomyelia may occur as an isolated condition or alongside other anomalies like scoliosis, hemivertebra, spina bifida, or Arnold-Chiari malformation.
