What is balloon kyphoplasty?
When an individual suffers from an old osteoporotic fracture of the spine, the affected vertebra may become wedge-shaped, leading to kyphosis. This spinal deformity can result in neural or spinal cord symptoms. To restore vertebral height and alleviate complications, a specialized procedure known as balloon kyphoplasty is performed. In this minimally invasive technique, a balloon is carefully inserted percutaneously into the fractured vertebra. The balloon is then inflated with a contrast liquid, much like a regular balloon expanding when filled, which helps to elevate the collapsed bone. Once the desired height is achieved, the balloon is removed, and the resulting cavity is filled with vertebroplasty cement to stabilize the vertebra and provide structural support.
