Spine & Open door

What is Open door laminoplasty?

Open door laminoplasty is a surgical technique used to decompress the spinal cord, typically in the cervical spine, without removing the lamina entirely. In this procedure, the surgeon creates a hinge on one side of the vertebral lamina and cuts through the opposite side, allowing the bone to swing open like a door—hence the name. This “door” is then held open using small plates or bone wedges, expanding the spinal canal and relieving pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Unlike laminectomy, which removes the lamina, open door laminoplasty preserves spinal stability and motion while addressing conditions such as cervical myelopathy or spinal stenosis.
