What is a PLIF/Bullet cage in spine surgery ?
A PLIF cage, or Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion cage, is a bullet shaped specialized implant used in spine surgery to treat conditions like degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal instability. During a PLIF procedure, the surgeon accesses the spine from the back (posterior approach), removes the damaged disc, and inserts a PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) or Titanium interbody spacer—commonly referred to as a bullet cage—between two lumbar vertebrae. This cage restores disc height, promotes bone growth, and facilitates spinal fusion. To stabilize the spine, pedicle screws and rods are also placed, ensuring proper alignment and long-term support. PLIF cages are designed to optimize fusion outcomes, maintain lumbar lordosis, and reduce postoperative complications.
