Spine & Ganesha

What makes the thoracic vertebral lamina special?

The thoracic spine has a strong bony covering at the back called the lamina, which acts like a protective shield for the spinal cord. Its spinous process (the bony part you can feel when you touch your back) points sharply downward—almost like the trunk of Lord Ganesha. The transverse processes (side projections) are more visible here than in the lower back, and they connect to the ribs, resembling Ganesha’s ears. These bones are tightly packed together, leaving almost no gaps, which adds extra protection to the spinal cord.
