Osteoporotic Spine Fracture in a 65-Year-Old – A Case of Recovery Through Holistic Spine Care

A 65-year-old postmenopausal woman with severe osteoporosis suffered a fall that led to an osteoporotic spine fracture, diagnosed and treated six months ago with vertebroplasty. Initially, her recovery was smooth and promising. However, due to the absence of anti-osteoporotic medication such as teriparatide or denosumab, her condition began to deteriorate.

She returned with new complaints of back pain, girdle discomfort, and limited mobility—symptoms linked to thoracic myelopathy and progressive paraparesis. Detailed evaluation by Dr. Ramachandran, a reputed spine specialist in Bengaluru, revealed a dangerously low T-score of – 3.5 and a fresh D11 vertebral fracture adjacent to her previous D12 vertebroplasty. Imaging, including sitting and supine X-rays, demonstrated clear spinal instability and spinal cord compression.

She underwent a successful D9–L2 spinal stabilization surgery with augmented pedicle screws to restore mechanical integrity. Additionally, prophylactic cement augmentation of D8 and L3 was performed to prevent adjacent level fractures, a known complication in fragile osteoporotic bones.

Postoperatively, the patient showed significant improvement in pain relief and gradually regained mobility—first with the support of a walker and eventually achieving independent ambulation within three months. Her recovery was further supported by a comprehensive osteoporosis management plan including teriparatide injections, calcium, vitamin D, and fall-prevention strategies.

This case reinforces the importance of early anti-osteoporotic therapy following vertebroplasty, and the role of holistic spine care that combines surgical expertise, medication, and rehabilitation. If you’re seeking expert treatment for spinal fractures due to osteoporosis, trust Dr. Ramachandran’s multidisciplinary approach for safe, effective recovery and long-term spine health.
