Spine & Spinal cord scarring

What is Cervical spinal cord myelomalacia ?

Cervical spinal cord myelomalacia is a condition characterized by scarring of the spinal cord, akin to how skin forms scars after an injury. In this process, the damaged neural tissues are replaced by glial cells, which serve as scar tissue. This condition often arises due to prolonged compression or narrowing of the spinal cord, commonly caused by issues such as cervical spondylosis, ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), or traumatic events. On an MRI, it typically appears as a white patch within the spinal cord.
